Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy ..what is it?

A professional relationship based on our belief in the resourcefulness of human beings and in their ability to lead a positive and fulfilling life. Our approach is characterised by acceptance and understanding rather than judgement or interpretation. Confidentiality forms part of an agreed contract which is for twelve sessions initially, and may be extended at review.

Our approach

Our integrative approach is primarily person-centred but includes recognition of the significance of past experiences on an individual’s present situation. Our person-centred approach begins from our belief that we can be of most help to clients by enabling them to find their own solutions to problems or opportunities. Our approach to psychotherapy draws on Carl Rogers and is known as the person-centred approach, for two reasons. The necessity for a real relationship between therapist and client, and the need for therapist qualities which emphasise the dignity of the individual, the importance of personal choice and the significance of personal responsibility for development.

What are these qualities?

  1. Congruence: the therapist is able to self disclose comfortably and is willing to be in relationship with her client.
  2. Positive Regard: a belief that the client can be trusted to take responsibility for their development and this means living with uncertainty
  3. Empathy: Emotional understanding which can be communicated to clients.
